Replacing The Headlight Bulbs In An Audi A6 2011 – 2018
If you’re the owner of an Audi A6 C7 that’s built between 2011 to 2018 and you’re not sure how to change the bulbs for the main beam, dipped beam or the indicators then this guide is perfect for you.
Here, we cover off exactly how to change the bulbs with a step by step process.
Accessing The Drivers’ Side Bulbs
The dipped beam on an Audi A6 c7 (2011-2018) use D3S Bulbs which are OE Xenon.
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown on how to change the dipped beam bulbs:
- The only way to access these bulbs is from under the wheel arch so turning the wheels is the first step you need to do.
- Next, locate access panel (image below) in the wheel arch and remove the screw located at the top of the panel
- Now remove the dust cover (image below) by taking out the two screws located at the bottom of the cover
- Disconnect the cable at the bottom of the bulb (image below)
- Rotate the bulb 1/4 to the left and pull the bulb out carefully
- Remove the green collar (image below) located on top of the bulb
- Put the collar back onto your new bulb
- Insert the new bulb into the bulb holder, turn 1/4 to the right and connect the cable back onto the replacement bulb
- Put the dust cover back on, put the screws back in and then put the access panel back on
Here are some images to help you with this step-by-step guide:
The main beam bulbs require more access than dipped beam bulbs for this vehicle.
To change the main beam bulbs on your vehicle, follow these instructions:
- Pop the bonnet (switch is located next to the foot-well on the drivers’ side)
- Removing the cover (see images below)
- Remove the two plugs holding the cover in – make sure to use a flat head screwdriver or something flat like a plastic spatula
- Once removed, pull the cover off and place somewhere safe
- Next, remove the dust cover to the main beam bulb
- Now you have access to the bulb, simply twist the bulb and pull out carefully
- Work the bulb off the top of the bulb holder and replace with your new bulb
- Fitting it back in is simply the reverse of the previous steps
- Put the dust cover back on and you are good to go
Here are some images to help visualise changing the main beam bulbs on an Audi A6 C7:
Access to the indicator bulbs is the exact same process as accessing the main beam bulbs.
You still need to remove the large cover and then follow these simple steps:
- Remove the dust cover
- Leverage a flat head screwdriver underneath the base of the bulb and lever it up
- Twist the bulb to the left and pull it out
- Once the bulb is out of the socket, pinch the sides of the bulb holder and pull the bulb off
- Once again, do everything in reverse to put your new bulb into your car
By now, you would have noticed that after following the steps above to change the main beam and indicators, you only have access to the passengers’ side.
To access the drivers’ side to change the bulbs, follow these simple steps:
- Firstly you will need to remove the airduct (see images below)
- To do this, remove the two screws (image below)
- Once they are removed, take out a third and final screw located behind a panel at the front (image below)
- Now you can take out the panel the screws were holding in – just pull it out carefully
- Next, remove the hose with the air filter by twisting the tabs at the base of the hose
- Pull out the air filter
- Now take out the air duct – keep in mind it can be quite difficult but some persistence in key
- You will now have full access to the main beam and indicator bulbs
- Replace your bulbs and put everything back as it should be

can the LED parking lights be replaced?
Hello,
this is really useful, many thanks. Is there a video on how to remove the whole lamp unit for this car. I have a 2014 sedan, with the lamp access hatch in the inner wheel arch, so one of the earlier cars of this era? All the videos I have seen show 2 very accessible screws at the bottom of the lamp housing, and I do not have these screws on my car. Any suggestions? Many thx, Andrew
This is only correct for the early A6 C7’s. Anything older that 2014/2015 has D5S. The inner wheel arch liner needs to be removed although the buld fitment appears easier.
